How to Triple Your Online Sales Overnight

Do you make money online?

Why?

Or maybe a better question is, Why not?

Last year alone, Amazon.com made $24.5 BILLION dollars in online sales.

Why didn’t you get a piece of that pie?

I’ve been running online businesses and teaching others how to start an online business for over six years now and have learned one main point that I can’t teach clearly enough…

Online Marketing is about SALES!

If you want to actually make money online, you have to provide a product or service that has enough demand and that you won’t have to compete with the likes of Wal-Mart and Costco to sell.

Online marketing is NOT just about selling products ONLINE!

To me, this is one of the most common misconceptions about an internet business – that most, if not all, of the sales are made online.

First off, yes, your eCommerce website can be the PORTAL to sell your products online. But you’re not necessarily LIMITED to only selling them there.

Some of the biggest sales I’ve made online have been because of connections made OFFLINE that then got the ball rolling to finalize the sales online.

Do you have an affiliate program for your website?

I was talking with a client today about his website that sells cool pencil cases. He’s using a website builder that has a custom affiliate program BUILT IN! I was pretty excited for him when I heard that he’d made about 70 sales within the last week.

I asked him how many of those sales he’d made were now affiliates that were promoting his products to their friends and family in exchange for a little commission on sales they helped create.

He told me 1 person was and they’d helped generate FOUR sales already.

I then did the math. 1 person for 4 sales….?

That means, if he got all 75 people who bought from him already to do a bit of affiliate promoting…. He be “in the money” for (at least) 300 sales!

From 4 sales to 300 sales is actually  A LOT MORE than TRIPLING YOUR ONLINE SALES!

Are you seeing where I’m going here…?

How to Build a Successful Affiliate Program for Your Ecommerce Store

As we talked more, ideas started coming about what he could be doing. Here are some I want to collect on “paper”.

  1. Have an affiliate program built for your eCommerce store or find one.
  2. When a sale is made and a new client is added to your database, email them right away to thank them for their business.
  3. In that same email, or in follow up emails, ask them questions and build the business relationship:
    1. How did they find your website?
    2. Do they have any recommendations or suggestions for your website?
    3. What did they like about the product(s) or service?
    4. What can you add to the site that would make it even better for the end user?
    5. What other products would they like to see in the future?
    6. Would they buy from your website again in the future? Why or why not?
    7. If they could refer the product(s) to their friends and family for a commission, would they?
    8. Do they know what affiliate marketing is?
  4. Make some of these questions direct links to a page on your website that explains more about what they can do to make money or help a cause or whatever…(a landing page with an invitation to do something)
  5. On the landing page, teach them how they can set up their own affiliate program on your site and get PAID as they refer your products to friends and family who then BUY your products.
  6. Teach them about http://bit.ly – a website address shortening service that basically “hides” all the affiliate tracking information and keeps the website address short and easy to remember.
  7. If they want to do “Offline Sales”, teach them about how they could collect the money from buyers of your products offline and then go through their own affiliate link to make sure they get credit for the sale.
  8. Encourage them to think about their email list, their friends on Facebook, and offline connections too.
  9. Start helping them make a list of people they think would be ideal for the product or service you offer.

These were just a few of the ideas that came to mind as we talked about the success he was having so far with his new online business.

What are other suggestions you have to double, triple, even QUADRUPLE your sales online?

(by the way, the title is an example of a Flashy Headline and nothing else; yes, I do think a process like this has potential to triple sales overnight, but I DON’T believe in “get rich quick” schemes at all…)

You Can Be an Entrepreneur Too!

A lot has been going on.

I was recently motivated by this quote:

“If you don’t take action to accomplish YOUR goals, you will get used to accomplishing someone else’s…”

So, does that quote hit home to you?

What are you going to do about it?

This new-age entrepreneur video is a great tribute to all my friends and clients who wonder if they can really be entrepreneurs.

I’m grateful for the following things:

  • my family, who supports me even though they don’t always understand why I would take a pay cut to focus more on my first website
  • my Arizona SEO mentor who got me started in online marketing and ecommerce and continues to share insights
  • the opportunity I have to work with great entrepreneurs every day at Prosper
  • my “devil school” friend who lets me do what I’m best at and pursue new options with our video and photography company

How Social Networks Use SEO

I have been talking a lot lately with clients about how a social network profile can help your online business.

A few points I focus on include:

  • Backlinks on other credible sites
  • Direct interaction with your target audience
  • Online networking with big players in your field
  • Ability to monitor competitor involvement and strategy
  • Online reputation management & brand awareness
  • Natural SEO & link building if profile pages are allowed to be set up correctly

The last point was one I’ve always known, but it didn’t come to me so clearly until tonight when I was talking to one of the managers of a new political social network. Over the past few days, I’ve been working to help him understand the importance of social media in organic search engine optimization.

One of the goals his company has is to be the “LinkedIn of Politics” or the “Politically Focused Facebook”. Granted, it’s hard to compete with the likes of Facebook, but the point he made to me was that these big websites don’t really do SEO. That statement really made me think, “Is he right?” “Is organic SEO really that important or…?”

I thought about that for the rest of that day and through out the day today. My gut kept saying “Yeah right! SEO is a MUST!”,  but he had made some valid points.

Then the light clicked on as I was driving home this evening.

One of the MAIN WAYS big companies like LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter do organic SEO is by letting USERS do the SEO for them.

How Social Networks Use SEO

Think about it:

  • Social networks let people, some of which are very, very good at SEO, online PR, etc. build unique, SEO friendly profile pages: (http://facebook.com/mollermarketing) 🙂
  • These profile pages have lots of dynamic and static content
  • The profile pages have tons of quality external links with relevant topics
  • These same creators of individual profile pages in-directly, and some times directly, promote their social media profiles (follow me on twitter) 🙂
  • Some users build profile pages just to say they have lots of followers.
  • Others promote their profile pages for online reputation management.

But the bottom line is, the USERS are doing a lot of the hard core SEO grunt work – the off-site SEO link building, the viral marketing, etc.

By allowing visitors to set up static profile pages with friendly URLs, social networks like Facebook and Twitter are saying, “Sure, we’ll let you have a “free account” but we’ll grow our investment capital over and over again because you’re building yet another indexable page for us and adding your name and info to our “subscriber list…Thanks for stoping by…”

I'll just wait for the SEO Train to stop by...

I agree that at some point, Facebook and Twitter and LinkedIn my not care (as much) about organic SEO, but maybe they do afterall.

Facebook has been making changes that hint to the fact that SEO is important to them:

  • Indexable pages
  • Friendly URLs
  • Etc.

Organic SEO is here to stay.

Yes, word of mouth marketing plays a crucial role in the heavy growth of websites, especially social networks.

But every online business, big or small, needs to make the time to work on organic SEO strategy: if they don’t, their competitors will.

What are your thoughts on social networks and SEO?

Craigslist Scams Revisited – 5 Main Scam Indicators

It’s funny how creative people get on Craigslist and other Free Classifieds.

The scariest thing is that I’ll bet their “creativity” is actually working on a few people.

I’ve written similar posts about Craigslist scams before, but the one I was the target for recently was a bit more unique.

I recently posted an ad on Craigslist for a 2008 Honda Civic. Basically I’m just testing the market on a car I’m leasing for business, but I think it’s an interesting case study too.

Here are a few of the emails I’ve received:

First Indicator of a Craigslist Scam:

The vagueness of the question. “Is this posting…”

Tip: If someone sends you an email that doesn’t say EXACTLY what the product is, it’s probably a scam.

Second Indicator of a Craigslist Scam:

The follow-up email they sent:

What made this scam attempt a bit unique was that they mentioned the brand of the car I am attempting to sell.

Most follow-up emails will still be vague and un-targeted.

Third Indicator of a Craigslist Scam

Offering MORE than the asking price. Maybe this has really happened for some, but I’ve been selling and buying things on Craigslist for 4 years now and have NEVER seen this happen.

The people who use Craigslist legally are generally looking for good deals.

Forth Indicator of a Craigslist Scam

Shipping, Out of Country Transaction, Asking for PayPal email ID, Shipping Companies, etc.

Fifth Indicator of a Craigslist Scam

Bad Grammar!

I mean, it’s not a requirement to spell or write correctly to sell things online, but things like “Hoping to read back from you soonest…” is pretty obvious.

Again, the thing I thought to be creative on this one was that they actually did mention the brand of the product when they emailed back.

Got this warning on another Free Classified website that applies to Craigslist too.

[Website name] is meant to be a local service for those in Utah and the immediately surrounding areas. However, individuals outside of the country will frequently contact sellers or post their own fraudulent ads. Do not be misled! These are not honest people with exceptional deals, but criminals trying to take your money. Watch for the following signs:1. Buyer explains that they are currently out of the county.

2. Buyer offers to pay with a money order or cashiers check for significantly more than the asked for price.

3. Buyer explains that a third party or service will pick up or deliver the item.

4. Email inquiry is poorly written, generic, or strange sounding.

5. Offer is simply too good to be true.

Have you received emails like these when selling products on Craigslist?

If you’d like help listing items on Craigslist in a professional way, contact us today. (include “CL Listing Help” in the message for a special MM discount)

UPDATE

I just received another email this morning, another perfect example of an attempted Craigslist Scam.

Notice how they follow they same warnings we’ve talked about:

  • “…item posted…” (not specific about WHAT the product is)
  • “…ready to pay for it immediately without any delay…” (this doesn’t happen very often, if at all, on Craigslist)
  • “…tell me what price exactly will be your best asking price…will wait to read from you.” (grammar and unclear – if they had actually looked at the product, they would KNOW the asking price)

ANOTHER UPDATE

Hope these updates help you in your quest to make money via Craigslist:

If You’re Not Marketing to a Niche, You’re Going to FAIL!

I talk with hundreds of people every week via phone, webinars and in person about starting an online business.

Many of them are new to the entire scene of online marketing.

For most of them, this is their first venture in to the big world of eCommerce.

There are two main hurdles I try to “sell” to them from day one. Jumping over these two hurdles can help them be most successful with their online business.

  1. Finding Suppliers
  2. Finding a Niche

I put these two hurdles in this order mainly because, if you don’t have anything to sell, it doesn’t MATTER what your niche is. Finding wholesale suppliers can be easy if you know where to look.

But the topic I wanted to write most about today is finding a niche and why it’s so important.

I found this article that can’t say it any more directly from Perry Marshall:

Last night I was in Indiana and a guy I don’t know very well asked me what I did.
“Marketing consultant. I specialize in Google advertising.”

2-3 years ago that answer usually produced a puzzled look. Most people didn’t even know that “Google” and “advertising” even belonged in the same sentence. Now PPC is so mainstream, it usually provokes a further series of questions.

Will says, “You know, I’ve been thinking” [I think know what he’s gonna say next] “….why don’t I start some kind of online business where I take orders and send them on to the manufacturers who ship stuff direct for me, and…”

I replied, “A lot of people do that, and there’s an endless supply of manufacturers that know how to make stuff but don’t know how to sell it. You’ll find them at any trade show. Oh and by the way, the BIG opportunities are with the foreign manufacturers, cuz they have no clue how to sell stuff here. That model can definitely pay off.”

We talk some more. I explain, “Now here’s a litmus test that will tell you if you’re in the right kind of business.” We were standing in the lobby of his church and someone was playing music in another room somewhere.

I said, “If you walk in that room and give one of your church buddies the elevator speech for your business, and they immediately understand it… you’re in the wrong business. If you’re starting a solo online biz, the only way you have a chance is if it’s a niche within a niche.

“If you tell them, ‘My business sells RS232 interfaces for computers made between 1995 and 2000 and we enable software communication with Unix blah blah blah’ they’ll have no idea what you just said. That’s probably a good niche.

“Or if you tell them, ‘I do property tax negotiations for landlords who’ve failed to file form GL632 and are in violation of the Underhill Act of 1964’ their eyes will glaze over because they don’t get it. That’s probably also good business to be in.

“You want to choose some teeny tiny hill and be the #1 king of that hill in the whole world.”

He nodded his head excitedly. “I GOT IT! THANKS!”

The lightbulb went on. I was there when it happened, I saw it :^> He’s a sharp sales guy and I’m sure his imagination is working overtime now.

And so it is with you. If you’re getting killed in a mainstream market, narrow your focus to a smaller niche within that market. Fight a battle you can win, and prevail…

This article sums it up!

Be the king of that small hill that has some demand but has little competition and DOMINATE!

I love online marketing. I put in minimal time with some of my online businesses and they continue to make money. Why?

  • Not because I was sold in to some “get rich quick” scheme
  • Not because I picked the “hottest products out there” and sold them
  • Not because I knew all about this online marketing stuff before I started
  • Because I’ve found SPECIFIC NICHES and then dominated those niches over and over again!

How are you implementing what Perry writes about?

Top 6 Ways to Acquire Local Search Engine Traffic

For years, small businesses have been plagued with the dilemma of the high cost of online marketing.

I always tell small business owners, “If you can’t afford to pay someone to do it for you, there are plenty of resources to help you learn how to do it.” After all, that’s how most of us got started in the business; by necessity.

I am no different; however my journey started a bit earlier than most (back in 1999).

Today, there are plenty of low cost and free resources for the small business owner who wants to win online, so there is really no excuse for not having some sort of online marketing program for your business. If you are a small business owner, I want to share with you 6 strategies that you can use to acquire local online market share.

The first two won’t cost you a dime, technically #6 could be done at no cost, and the cost of the other 3 will depend on your skills.

Nonetheless, I challenge you to take some kind of action if they are applicable to you.

  1. Local Business Profiles. All three major search engines (Google, Yahoo, and Bing) allow you to build a local business profile at no cost. There are certainly ways to optimize these for maximum search engine benefit, but being there is the first step. Follow the instructions and most of all, build a complete profile (don’t leave any blanks). The goal is to have your business show up in the map based search results on each site respectively.
  2. Local City/Business Guides. There are literally dozens of these and some have more value than others but most still offer free listings in additional to their paid options. If you have not taken advantage of local business profiles, I recommend checking out Merchant Circle, CitySquares, and Yelp for starters. You can also find reputable search marketing providers that can simplify these submissions for you as my firm does.
  3. Mobile Search. With the growth in use of iPhones, Droids, BlackBerrys, and other smart phones, you are really missing out if you are not getting in front of this audience. While search engines and local directories feed some mobile providers data, another great solution is to have a mobile version of your website which can be listed in various mobile directories and display well on mobile devices.
  4. Local Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Make sure your website is not only optimized for keyword related to what you do, but also for your location. It is critical to make sure that your physical address appears on your website as the search engines will take notice. From a link building standpoint, the number of inbound links you need to outrank your competitors will be determined by how competitive your business is. And for those who don’t know what links are, this refers to having other sites that are connected to yours. These could be search engine directories, press mentioned, or simply links from complementary websites and they act as votes for your site in the eyes of the search engines.
  5. Paid Search. Sometimes paying for search engine traffic turns out to be a great way to get the job done. Just make sure that you use geo-targeting so that you only pay for local search engine traffic or you will be wasting money. My advice if you are going to do this on your own is to make sure the first thing you do is learn how to set daily limits and use this feature to protect you against overspending.
  6. Social Media. The best way for a small business to get involved in social media is to have a blog. I know it takes time, but it will pay off. Just put it on your schedule and make it happen. You can use free blogging software such as blogger, but for long term success I recommend having your blog be a part of your website. Once you have gotten blogging down, you can add additional social media venues such as Facebook (where you can connect with local customers) and YouTube (where your video could get take on a mind of its own, if it’s unique enough).

I hope this is helpful and I look forward to hearing your local search engine marketing success story!

This guest post was written by Anthony Kirlew, founder of a.k.a. Internet Marketing, a full service online marketing firm with a commitment to making local search engine marketing affordable to small business owners.

The Darryl Strawberry Drop-Out on the Apprentice

HEADS UP: This post doesn’t necessarily follow anything I generally talk about at Moller Marketing; however, it shows that running a business takes work and effort, characteristics that it appears Darryl Strawberry doesn’t have anymore – he quit the Apprentice because he was tired.

As many of you know, I’ve been an avid New York Yankee fan since I was born (and I’m from Idaho for crying out loud).

I’ve followed the Yanks through the thick and thin.

But what happened tonight on The Apprentice really let me down for a former New York Yankee super star.

Darryl Eugene Strawberry (born March 12, 1962) is a former American baseball player who is well-known both for his play on the field and for his controversial behavior off of it. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Strawberry was one of the most feared sluggers in the game, known for his prodigious home runs and his intimidating presence in the batter’s box with his 6-foot-6 frame and his long, looping swing that elicited comparisons to Ted Williams.[1] During his 17-year career, he helped lead the New York Mets to a World Series championship in 1986 and the New York Yankees to three World Series championships in 1996, 1998 and 1999. (bold added for emphasis) Wikipedia

What Darryl Strawberry did tonight was far from an “intimidating presence”. Controversial isn’t even a great description.

What Darryl Strawberry did for his charity of Autism and for his reputation as a baseball player and person overall was flat out GUTLESS!

It’s kind of funny, this blog actually started back in December of 2006. I’d just watched the Apprentice and saw Michelle Sorro QUIT before she got fired by Mr. Trump.

I wrote a post titled “Michelle Sorro, The Apprentice Quiter” which got me over 1,000 unique visitors in one day as a brand new blog.

This episode tonight, in my opinion, was even WORSE.

Michelle Sorro was and really still is a no-body.

Darryl Strawberry, on the other hand, is was a baseball icon, someone that people looked up to.

Now, he’ll have an asteric next to his name like other baseball players of his era.

Darryl, if you read this, I send you my condolences for making a crucial “error in the World Series” of an autistic persons life.

Does Increased Traffic Improve SEO Rankings?

All I have to do is just start a website and “Viola” – the traffic will just appear.

I’ve heard, if I get lots of traffic, Google will take note of that and move me up the charts.

I’m thinking about buying a list so I can get the big traffic and be ranked high in SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, can be a big myth to many people, especially those that believe some of these statements above.

What is the right answer then?

And how do you find the truth?

First recommendation would be to hire a Utah SEO consultant 🙂

If you’re not ready for that yet, try it out on your own for a while, and then hire an SEO consultant to fix what you may have messed up.

Before you mess it up too bad though, there are a lot of great people out there willing to share tips and tricks.

Thanks to Rand Fishkin from SEOMoz for the clarification on traffic in correlation to search engine rankings in his Whiteboard Friday tip.

Does Traffic Equal High SEO Results?

Summary

Talking about user and usage data and why they don’t influence search results very much.

“Maybe if I get lots of users to go to Google, search for my brand name, click my listing, and then check out my site, Google will give me higher rankings…”

The answer is, “No, not really!”

This strategy is pretty “gameable”. It doesn’t follow the SEO model of link popularity, inbound link quality scores, etc.

On their own, user data will not improve SEO rankings.

The big reason why it won’t work is manipulation.

Mechanical Turk: people who will do small tasks on the web for small amounts of money. Millions of people participate in mechanical turk. However, it’s not going to work for SEO – you can’t hire “turkers” to go visit your site and certain times of day and manipulate search engine results. It’s too easy to manipulate.

Bot Net: zombie computers that create manipulative activity to trick the search engines. Welcome to the world of Black Hat SEO.

The SEO Techniques that Really Matter

  • Accessibility
  • Internal Link Structure
  • Site Architecture
  • Keyword Research & Targeting
  • Link Building
  • Social Networking Aspects

Clicking on your search engine listing isn’t going to help you magically appear at the number one spot.

How did this help clarify your SEO strategy?

Thanks to my SEO friend, Dan Patterson, for sharing this video clip with me.

How Do You Handle the Trials of Starting an Online Business

I can’t do this…

That costs too much money.

This takes too much time.

I can’t find wholesale suppliers.

I didn’t think it was going to be this hard.

I thought I could make money overnight.

I didn’t think I’d actually have to DO anything.

If you’ve ever heard these excuses or been the culprit of saying them yourself as you build your 1st online business, CHANGE NOW or forever be stuck in the rut you’re in.

Yes, unfortunately, I’ve heard all of these excuses multiple times as I teach clients how to start an online business.

At first, I just laughed them off or ignored them.

Then, I would repeat what they just said in the form of a question.

Now, I flat out call them on the stupidity of such statements.

I know, maybe a bit harsh, but I’d rather be honest up front.

Cold Hard Facts about Starting an Online Business

  • Running a business is hard work.
  • It’s not for everyone.
  • It takes WORK.
  • It takes creativity.
  • It takes ambition and the ability to break your fears about the unknown.
  • It takes a positive attitude.

Have you ever read this story?

As I was thinking about this topic, I found this funny video on YouTube. It reminded me about how some people, no matter what they get “thrown at them“, always have a positive attitude and keep moving forward (which is what you HAVE to do if you want to succeed with an online business).

If you’re reading this blog post in an email and want to see the video, visit MollerMarketing.com.

Here are some tips.

7 Tips to a Positive Attitude

  1. Be yourself. When you constantly try to be the person others want you to be, you cheat yourself out of individuality and your own dreams. What do you want out of life? Once you can answer this question, the next step is to plan your daily routine to include at least one or two elements that bring your goals closer.
  2. Even if you can’t control outside circumstances, you can control your reaction to them. If you’re currently working in a dead-end job with a boss who is demeaning, make a conscious effort to tell yourself that his poor behavior can make you upset only if you allow it.
  3. Leave your work at the office, mentally that is. When you step outside after a trying day’s work, tell yourself that you have all day tomorrow to deal with the problems and mentally switch gears by thinking something positive or planning your next vacation, even if it’s months away.
  4. Slow down. When constantly pressed to finish tasks, you can develop a negative attitude towards life. If time is a commodity, figure out how you can schedule your chores more efficiently. Just by rising 15 minutes earlier each day, you will have the time to eat breakfast, enjoy the fresh air, and plan the day.
  5. Learn something new every day. What have you learned today? As a child, your curiosity led you to explore and learn. Recapture that feeling today by taking a night class, studying a new language, learning to garden or anything else that interests you. Subscribing to this blog via email could be one way to learn something new :).
  6. Focus on the Positive. What are great things that have happened to you today? Include achievements. Make a long detailed list of everything that you do well or at least that is not negative. Read the list when you need a mental boost.
  7. Help others. Extending a helping hand to those in need makes you feel needed and worthwhile. Make it a habit to volunteer for charitable organizations. Helping others allows us to be thankful for the blessing we have and helps us maintain a positive attitude.

How do you plan to apply these tips (and the Laughing Baby example) to your online business building experience?
